Gil Gelpi
Gil Gelpi (1985, Lisbon, Portugal)
Inspired by the philosophers Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, and Spinoza’s concept of substance, Gil Gelpi interprets the human body and all that exists as a substance in a constant state of becoming. In his creations, we can detect a rhizomatic logic: a form of intuitive growth that follows an almost bacterial pattern, where the inside melts with the outside, concentrating impulses and emotions, flows and energies, memories and instincts—constantly changing, breathing, imagining…
In his hometown, Gil Gelpi began his art studies at Ar.Co and the António Arroio Art Schools before completing his film studies at E.S.T.C. University, where he met Professor Rafael Godinho, the translator of much of Deleuze’s work into Portuguese. In 2009, he won an artist exchange program and held his first solo exhibition at the Magyar Muhely Galeria in Budapest. Later that same year, he moved to Barcelona to study sculpture at Escola Massana. From 2011 to 2017, he worked for the sculptor Samuel Salcedo. In 2018, he began teaching sculpture at the Escola de Ceràmica de la Bisbal. He now splits his time between Sintra, Portugal, and Barcelona, Spain. His works are part of many private collections in Canada, the U.S.A., Mexico, Austria, the U.K., Slovakia, Luxembourg, Spain, and Portugal.
