Joan Rovira

Joan Rovira began his studies at the Massana School in 1985. During a period of discovery of new materials, the multidisciplinary artist became captivated by the sound of bamboo as he carved it, and from that moment, he began to experiment with this material.

His initial creations with bamboo were sewing needles. Over time, Joan Rovira’s artistic focus shifted primarily to handmade jewelry. What he didn’t anticipate, however, was that someone would contact him inquiring about large bamboo figures they had seen on his website. This confusion, resulting from his forgetting to include the measurements of the needles in the online store, sparked in the artist the desire to expand beyond jewelry and begin experimenting with sculptures, lamps, and other works of art using a material that had fascinated him from the outset.

Currently, Joan Rovira is responsible for harvesting bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea and Phyllostachys pubescens) in various regions of Catalonia. In fact, nature has always been his primary source of inspiration—the starting point for creating universes where shadows, colors, and textures engage in a dialogue with the human experience.

Permanent artist in Artevistas.
